Edit a vocabulary entry
The OCR didn’t quite get it right? You want to add a personal mnemonic? Here’s everything you can change on a saved entry, and where each control lives.
Open the entry and enter edit mode
Tap any entry in your vocabulary list to open the detail screen. In the AppBar, tap the pencil icon (tooltip “Edit entry”). It turns into a checkmark — tap again later to exit edit mode.
While in edit mode, several controls become tappable that are read-only when viewing.
Edit the source text
In the entry card, tap the pencil icon next to the source word (tooltip “Edit word”). A dialog opens with the field labeled “Word or phrase”. Fix the text and save.
Editing the source is what to do when OCR mis-read a letter — typing café when it captured cofé, for example. After editing, refresh the lookup so the translation and definition reflect the corrected text.
Edit the translation
Tap the pencil icon next to the translation (tooltip “Edit translation”). The dialog title is “Edit translation”. Use this when you’d rather phrase the translation differently than what the dictionary or AI returned.
Edit pronunciation
Tap the pencil icon next to the pronunciation line (tooltip “Edit pronunciation”). The dialog has two fields:
- IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) — placeholder example “/ˈprʌnˌsiˈeɪʃn/”. For learners who use IPA.
- Phonetic respelling — placeholder example “prun-see-AY-shun”. A more readable alternative.
Either field can be filled or left blank. Both display on the entry afterward.
Add a personal note
Personal notes are great for mnemonics, example sentences, or context the dictionary doesn’t carry.
- No note yet: in edit mode, an “Add note” button appears below the translation (with a small notes icon). Tap it.
- Note already exists: in edit mode, tap the existing note text to re-open the editor.
The dialog is titled “Edit note”, with the field labeled “Personal note” and placeholder “Add a short explanation, mnemonic, or example”. The note is shown under the heading “Your note” on the entry afterward.
Copy or share an entry
Copy and Share aren’t on the detail screen — they’re on the list row’s 3-dot menu:
- Open the Vocabulary list (don’t open the entry).
- Tap the ⋮ More actions icon on the entry’s row.
- Pick Copy (puts the entry’s text on your clipboard) or Share (opens your phone’s share sheet).
The same menu has a Delete option — useful when you don’t need to open the entry just to remove it.
Exit edit mode
Tap the checkmark in the AppBar (tooltip “Exit edit mode”) or just navigate away. Changes are saved as you make them.
